Buddhist Recovery Retreat: Using the Dharma to Overcome Addiction

With Dr. Valerie Mason-John M.A and Kevin Griffin

July 5 - 8, 2018

In this inaugural retreat, we introduce Buddhist recovery through the lens of the 12 Step model and the 8 Step Recovery Buddhist program that can be a complement or an alternative to other recovery programs. We welcome people to this retreat of all genders, sexualities, races, classes and cultures, who are working in recovery from any kind of addictive substance or behavior. This retreat will be co-led by Kevin Griffin, who popularized 12 Steps and Buddhism, and Valerie (Vimalasara) Mason-John, who co-founded Eight Step Recovery, Using the Buddhist Teachings to Overcome Addiction.

Participation in this retreat will help you:

• Gain deeper knowledge of the basic teachings
• Learn how to integrate core Buddhist principles into your recovery program
• Develop specific Loving Kindness and Mindfulness practices to support your daily recovery
• Invest in your ‘Recovery Capital’, internal and external resources necessary to help achieve and maintain recovery from substance misuse as well as make behavioral changes.
• Integrate traditional Buddhist teachings into a 12-Step program, with special emphasis on finding a non-theistic approach to the Steps.
• Explore the importance of cultivating Loving Kindness towards ourselves, and how this can help to support our sobriety of mind. Many of us with addictions have such low self-esteem or shame about our past actions, that Loving Kindness is an imperative antidote for our “stinking thinking” and proliferation of thought.

Dr. Valerie Mason-John M.A (Hon. Doc) is President of the Buddhist Recovery Network (BRN), an international organization to help promote Buddhist Recovery. She is an award winning author and a co-founder of Eight Step Recovery: Using The Buddha’s Teachings to Overcome Addiction, with 8 Step recovery meetings in three continents. She is also the co-founder of the secular program Mindfulness Based Addiction Recovery (MBAR), an eight-week course for people struggling or wanting to maintain their abstinence and sobriety of mind. Kevin Griffin
Kevin Griffin is an internationally respected Buddhist teacher and author known for his innovative work connecting dharma and recovery, especially through his 2004 book One Breath at a Time: Buddhism and the Twelve Steps. He has been a Buddhist practitioner for over thirty-five years and a teacher for two decades. With teachings firmly based in the Theravada Buddhist tradition, he reaches a broad range of audiences in dharma centers, wellness centers, and secular mindfulness settings.
