Mission & History Mission Statement For a thousand years, Tibet was called the “Land of Medicine” by its neighbors. It is in this spirit that we named our center Menla, which is Tibetan for “Medicine Buddha.” Menla’s mission is to offer a world-class spa and integrated healing system, combining the best of Western integrative medicine with elements of Tibetan medicine, Ayurveda, and other holistic traditions. General Management Staff Managing Director Nena v.S. Thurman Nena is the Managing Director of Tibet House US and Menla Mountain Retreat. She was a successful fashion model in the 1950s and ’60s before becoming a psychotherapist. She has been married to Robert Thurman for over 40 years, and together they have raised four children, including Tibet House US Executive Director Ganden Thurman and renowned actress Uma Thurman. In 1991 Nena join the board of the newly established Tibet House US, and in 2001 she began working on establishing and developing Menla. Nena oversees the general management of Menla as well

Volunteering and Work-Trade We graciously welcome volunteers and WWOOFers to come spend time working at Menla. Volunteering here is a great help to us and is in turn very rewarding for the volunteer. Typically we need the most help in the kitchen, garden, or housekeeping, although we occasionally need help with special projects and with video/audio recording of teachings. Tibet House US/ Menla Work Trade For each full day the volunteer stays and attends one of our programs, the volunteer is expected to put in 3 hours of work.
